On a recent Saturday, on a beautiful spring evening in the multipurpose room of Vallecito Elementary School, I experienced what the framers of our Constitution must have meant by “a more perfect union.”
The gym was full of people from many walks of life — Jews, Muslims, Christians, atheists — people of many hues gathered to break bread and mingle in a community potluck dinner.
The event was called “Meet Your Muslim Neighbors.”
Retired Oakland police Sgt. LeRoy Johnson had no comment as he appeared in court Monday, accused of not reporting child abuse involving Jasmine Abuslin, the daughter of an Oakland police dispatcher.

Prosecutors say Johnson had a private Facebook chat with Abuslin on Sept. 21. According to Alameda County prosecutors, she told Johnson that she had sex with other Oakland police officers — and told him not to tell anyone.
